Roma Women and Men Are Capable, Ambitious, and Successful

To mark International Roma Day, Europe House, in cooperation with the NGO ROM “Koračajte sa nama – Phiren Amenca”, is organising a two-day event celebrating successful young Roma women and men.

Take a walk with us through the lives of Roma and Egyptian (RE) kickboxers, singers, journalists, and activists.

Sultan Imeri is an eighteen-year-old kickboxer who, through his sporting achievements and 93 matches, has successfully knocked out all prejudices and obstacles.

The life story of Serđan Baftijari is a source of true inspiration and guidance — from a tent settlement in Vrela Ribnička to completing a Master’s degree at the Central European University (CEU) in Vienna.

Sebastijan Baftijari refused to conform to stereotypes and behavioural patterns imposed by society and his surroundings; through his work, conduct, and attitude towards others, he has shown that change is possible.

The media hold immense power — they shape public opinion. This is why people like Jasmina Beriša are so important: individuals who represent the voice of the Roma community in the media and public sphere.

Anita Beriša is a successful Roma woman from Montenegro, known for her academic achievements. She was the first Roma woman to pursue a Master’s degree in Montenegro.

Music speaks directly to the heart and often has a stronger impact than any words. A single voice can sometimes carry the entire history and identity of a community. Such is the voice of Aldin Avdijaj, a distinguished singer whose music can be heard at celebrations across Montenegro and beyond.

He came to Montenegro as a child, and his upbringing in Nikšić was not easy. Life without parents, often without necessities, taught him what it means to struggle, but also what it means to be human.

Nardi Ahmetović is a Roma activist and Director of the non-governmental organisation “Centre for the Affirmation of the Roma and Egyptian Population” (CAREP).

Samanta Bajrami inspires society through her example and demonstrates the importance of hard work and dedication. She is employed by the Capital City of Podgorica, where she communicates daily with citizens and contributes to the work of the institution.

Samson Beriša is an example of hospitality and professionalism. Thanks to the project “Empower Yourself, Get Employed”, which supports the employment of young Roma and Egyptians, this young, successful Roma man quickly mastered the role of a waiter and became a favourite among colleagues and guests alike.

Adem (Deni) Beriša is a young Roma entrepreneur from Podgorica who has successfully built a career in trade.

The exhibition dedicated to these young individuals will open on 8 April 2026 at Europe House in Podgorica. It will remain open until 22 April, offering visitors the opportunity to explore their inspiring stories.

Following the opening, a concert dedicated to Roma and related music will be held, including a performance by the popular Roma singer and one of the faces of this campaign, Aldin Avdijaj.

Sharing these stories is of great importance, given that members of the Roma and Egyptian community often face various forms of discrimination. Highlighting their achievements helps to dismantle stereotypes, encourage empowerment, and present inspiring role models for future generations.

As part of the broader marking of International Roma Day, Europe House will host a partner event on 7 April 2026 within the EU-funded project “Roma Women in Focus”, with the support of the Centre for Investigative Journalism of Montenegro. This event will include a screening of a documentary and a panel discussion on the experiences and achievements of Roma women.
