Preserving the Tradition of Weaving the Bihor Carpet through EU support

The non-governmental organisation Bihorski Ćilim, as part of the implementation of the EU project YouSeed, has engaged weaving instructors and organised a multi-month training programme with the aim of transferring the skill of making the Bihor carpet to new generations.

The training forms part of the project entitled “Valorisation of the Craft of Making the Bihor Carpet”, which is financed through a call within the YouSEED project. The project is implemented by the Italian non-governmental organisation COSV in partnership with the Local Democracy Agency (LDA) and the Network for Rural Development of Montenegro (NRDM), with financial support from the European Union and co-financing from the Ministry of Public Administration.

The YouSeed project is focused on strengthening the capacities of civil society organisations and supporting initiatives that contribute to sustainable development and the preservation of cultural heritage. Through this activity, the NGO Bihorski Ćilim contributes to safeguarding traditional crafts, encourages young people’s interest in cultural heritage, and creates a foundation for future employment and economic empowerment within the local community.

The training is being successfully conducted on the NGO Bihorski Ćilim’s premises in Petnjica and represents, as emphasised by the organisation, a significant step in preserving the intangible cultural heritage of this region.

“The training has multiple benefits, because in addition to preserving the authentic skill of weaving the Bihor carpet, it contributes to raising awareness of the importance of cultural identity and the transmission of tradition from one generation to the next,” representatives of the NGO Bihorski Ćilim point out.

The training programme includes both theoretical and practical components, through which participants have the opportunity to become familiar with traditional weaving techniques, authentic motifs and the symbolism of the Bihor carpet, as well as with the complete production process – from the preparation of materials to the final finishing of the product. Particular emphasis is placed on direct work with experienced instructors, who pass on their knowledge and many years of experience to younger generations.

The NGO Bihorski Ćilim will continue, through projects and programmes and with the support of European partners, to actively work on the valorisation of cultural heritage and the development of the local community.
