European Mobility Week Officially Opened in Podgorica

“European Mobility Week reminds us that mobility is not only about transport systems, but about the kind of society we want to build — one where mobility is available, accessible, affordable, inclusive – and safe for all,” said Kai Nagel, Programme Officer for infrastructure at the Delegation of the European Union to Montenegro, during the Official Opening of the European Mobility Week in Podgorica.

He emphasised that Montenegro should continue to expand public transport, improve cycling and walking infrastructure, and ensure that mobility is affordable for every household, including those in the most remote villages.

“When transport is unaffordable, unsafe, or simply unavailable, people face what we call transport poverty. This limits access to jobs, education, and health services. For a country like Montenegro, with its mountainous geography, dispersed communities, and often limited public transport, these challenges are very real.” Nagel noted in his address.

The theme of this year’s event is Mobility for All, under the slogan Let’s Move Better!. Special focus has been placed on ensuring transport that meets the needs of all citizens, regardless of their social status, place of residence or physical ability.

Deputy Mayor Nađa Ljiljanić underlined that Podgorica aspires to become a modern European city where sustainable mobility is a priority.

“Podgorica should develop in line with modern European trends.  It aspires to be a city that cares for its environment, that gives priority to sustainable transport, to cyclists, pedestrians, families with children, elderly citizens, and to everyone who values moving freely and safely,” said Ljiljanić.

European Mobility Week is celebrated every year in Podgorica with the support of the Delegation of the European Union to Montenegro.

This year, the programme will last the entire week, from 16 to 22 September, featuring a series of events designed to engage the public and promote sustainable urban mobility, environmental awareness, and active transport.

European Mobility Week 2025 reminds us that mobility does not refer solely to transport systems, but also to the kind of society we wish to build – one where mobility is available, accessible and safe for all.
