Via Ferrata Piva opens the door to new tourist experiences through EU Support

In the Piva Canyon near Plužine, the first certified via ferrata in Montenegro is now available – a specially designed, secured climbing route along the rock face, equipped with cables, metal steps, and other safety features.

Opened in October 2024, Via Ferrata Piva is a protected climbing route stretching 800 metres. It is classified as moderately easy, with a maximum height of 130 metres above the River Piva.

The average tour lasts between 2.5 to 3 hours and, according to organisers, no prior climbing experience is required – a moderate level of fitness is sufficient.

The route begins at the bridge over the River Piva, descends to a natural spring, continues above the river, and concludes with a vertical ascent of 80 metres. The most frequent visitors to Via Ferrata Piva come from the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Israel, the United Kingdom, Serbia, Croatia, and the United States.

“We are pleased with the start of the tourist season, and the first organised groups of visitors arrived as early as March, from various parts of the world – including Morocco, Brazil, Venezuela, and Germany. This adventure attraction in the Piva Canyon near Plužine is increasingly drawing international tourists, confirming the growing interest in active tourism in this part of Montenegro,” emphasise representatives of Via Ferrata Piva.

Through such infrastructure projects, they conclude, the tourism offering is enhanced, and natural heritage is properly valued, which was also the aim of the Via Ferrata Piva project, implemented with the support of the European Union through the IPA Cross-Border Cooperation Programme Serbia–Montenegro.
