European Film Festival 2025 Coming to Three Montenegrin Cities

From 29 May to 7 June, Podgorica, Bijelo Polje, and Bar will transform into stages showcasing contemporary European cinema.

The European Film Festival 2025 is organised by the Delegation of the European Union to Montenegro through the Europe House project. The festival is supported by the Cineuropa platform, and it is organised in partnership with the Montenegrin Cinematheque, Music Centre of Montenegro, Film Centre of Montenegro, NGO Multimedija, the Cultural Centre Bijelo Polje, and the Cultural Centre Bar.

The programme includes award-winning feature films, documentaries, and animated films from France, Denmark, Malta, Romania, Luxembourg, Greece, the Czech Republic, Italy, and Croatia, all tackling contemporary social issues, culture, identity, and shared European values – with free admission to all screenings.

The festival will officially open on 29 May on the terrace of the Music Centre of Montenegro. Ceremony of the opening will start with a welcoming speech by the Ambassador of the EU to Montenegro, Johann Sattler, a performance by the actor-musician ensemble Actors Sing, and a screening of the French film Divertimento, directed by Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar, which delivers a powerful story about music, perseverance, and dreams.

The programme in Podgorica continues on 31 May at the same location, with an conversation with Montenegrin actor Momčilo Otašević on acting and identity. The conversation will be followed by a screening of the Danish comedy Fathers & Mothers, directed by Paprika Steen, which portrays challenges of a contemporary family.

On 1 June, the festival moves to the Cultural Centre Bijelo Polje, where the Luxembourgish animated film Icarus and the Minotaur, directed by Carlo Vogele, will be shown. On the same day, an engaging acting workshop for children with actress Žana Gardašević will also take place.

The following day, 2 June, Bijelo Polje will host screenings of two films: the Maltese Carmen, directed by Valerie Buhagiar, and the Romanian Three Kilometres to the End of the World, directed by Emanuel Pârvu.

In Bar, the festival continues on 6 June at the House of Revolution with the screening of Il Boemo, a Czech-Italian co-production directed by Petr Václav. The film offers a cinematic homage to music and artistic creation.

The festival’s closing event is scheduled for 7 June, also in Bar, featuring the screening of the Croatian film Hotel Pula, directed by Andrej Korovljev, and a final concert by Actors Sing.

Feature films, animations, documentaries, regional artists, concerts, discussions, and workshops create a festival atmosphere that goes beyond the cinema and enters the city’s heart.
