#BeActive EU Challenge at Gorica: The Winning Move Is to Be Active

A great number of primary school pupils from ten schools in Podgorica took part in the #BeActive EU Challenge at Gorica, an event organised as part of the European Week of Sport. Divided into mixed-school teams, the pupils tested their agility, knowledge, and team spirit through a series of sports and educational challenges, promoting physical activity, cooperation, and fair play.

The pupils, their teachers, and mentors were welcomed by the Secretary for Sport of the Capital City, Darko Nikčević; the Director of Europe House, Dr Nataša Beširević; and the Director of the Agency for the Management of Protected Areas of Podgorica, Dalibor Zečević.

Minister of Sports and Youth Zoran Jojić attended the event, while the diplomatic representatives of the Embassies of Greece, Italy and Romania joined the pupils during the competition, cheering on and supporting the school teams.

Throughout the competition, the teams tested their speed, agility, precision, knowledge, and coordination through five challenges: “No Anger, Just Victory”, “ZIG-ZAG Relay”, “Two-Wheel Sprint”, “Shoot for Victory” and “Honey Trail through Europe”. From quiz questions and relay tasks, to cycling and football courses, and finally to a challenge that combined sport with knowledge of the European Union, the tasks required active participation and contribution from every team member.

In addition to sporting performance, teamwork, mutual support, cooperation, and fair play were also assessed, meaning a team’s success depended not only on the physical abilities of individuals, but on their collective performance.

After all the challenges were completed and the points totalled, first place went to Vladimir Nazor Primary School, second place to Pavle Rovinski Primary School, while Milorad Musa Burzan Primary School finished third. All pupils from the three top-placed teams received free memberships at sports clubs, provided by the Secretariat for Sport of the Capital City, as an additional incentive to continue participating in sport. All participants also received #BeActive medals for taking part and successfully completing the challenges.

The event was jointly organised by the Delegation of the European Union to Montenegro, through Europe House, the Ministry of Sports and Youth, the Secretariat for Sport of the Capital City and the Agency for the Management of Protected Areas of Podgorica.

The European Week of Sport promotes sport and physical activity as an integral part of everyday life and encourages people of all generations to stay active throughout the year, regardless of age or fitness level. The #BeActive EU Challenge at Gorica conveyed this message through a shared sporting experience for pupils from ten Podgorica schools, with the aim of making physical activity and healthy habits a lasting part of their everyday lives beyond the European Week of Sport.
