Girls Creating the Future – International Girls in ICT Day

For a stronger voice and presence of women in the ICT sector – for a more resilient and equal society of the future

Podgorica is a city of youth, ideas, and connectivity—an open, inclusive, and digitally oriented community that invests in knowledge, education, and innovation. This was one of the messages conveyed during the event “Empowering Women in ICT: Bridging the Digital Divide,” held at Europe House to mark International Girls in ICT Day.

We must provide girls and young women with the knowledge, space, and safety to shape the digital future – So that they are not just spectators, but agents of change,” stated State Secretary Biljana Papović.

The panel participants discussed women leaders in ICT, cyber security, and AI, as well as the importance of building an inclusive digital ecosystem.

The Deputy Mayor of Podgorica, Nađa Ljiljanić, highlighted the significance of digital literacy, innovation, and cyber security as key values of modern society.

“We are not just building digital solutions – we are building a just society. A society where talent is recognised not by gender but by vision, knowledge, and courage,” said Ljiljanić.

The President of Women4Cyber Montenegro, Dr Andreja Mihailović, expressed hope that this event would spark girls’ energy and creative drive.

The event was organised through the support of the European Union, Europe House, Women4Cyber Montenegro, and the Young European Ambassadors.

International Girls in ICT Day was established by the United Nations and is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of April each year. It was first marked in Germany in 2001 when over a million girls participated.

The goal of this day is to empower girls in choosing their future careers. Girls should not be limited by stereotypes but should be guided by their interests and talents.
