Europe Day was marked in Bijelo Polje. Citizens, representatives of local government, and the European Union gathered for a series of events dedicated to Montenegro’s path towards the EU and to the local community’s contribution to this process.
The central celebration was opened by the Ambassador of the European Union to Montenegro, Johann Sattler, and the President of the Municipality of Bijelo Polje, Petar Smolović. Ambassador Sattler emphasised that Europe Day is “a reminder of what our societies can achieve when we choose cooperation and integration.” He added: “The real effects of European reforms and development are most visible at the local level – in municipalities such as Bijelo Polje – where people’s quality of life is tangibly improving and where real opportunities must reach every citizen.”
President Smolović expressed his satisfaction that the celebration of Europe Day – 9 May – began precisely in Bijelo Polje, highlighting that this municipality has always been a forerunner of positive change and intends to maintain that role in environmental protection.
He underlined the importance of Chapter 27, which presents numerous challenges, particularly in wastewater management and establishing a Regional Recycling Centre. Smolović stated that the plan is for Bijelo Polje to become a waste recycling hub for 12 northern municipalities, thereby avoiding the creation of a traditional landfill.
Ambassador Satler, along with the Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Region Development, Damjan Ćulafić, and President Smolović, talked with members of the local community about the construction of a future wastewater treatment facility. Responding to questions from citizens, Sattler stressed the significance of the project for public health and environmental protection: “A modern wastewater treatment plant is essential for the wellbeing of Bijelo Polje’s citizens. It protects water sources, supports economic development, and brings Montenegro closer to EU standards,” he stated.
In his address to the public, Minister Ćulafić noted that, while the EU Delegation and the Municipality of Bijelo Polje provide considerable support, citizens should know that the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Region Development stands behind them just as firmly. He also emphasised that in any project, cooperation with local authorities and the opinions of local residents are of paramount importance.
Speaking about Chapter 27 – Environment and Climate Change – the Minister highlighted the importance of meeting all obligations and expressed his belief that, with EU support, everything would be completed within the designated timeframe.
Ambassador Sattler used his visit to Bijelo Polje to discuss the construction of the future Regional Waste Processing Centre with local authorities. This is a key component of Montenegro’s waste management reform. He described the project as “a major opportunity for Bijelo Polje to become a leader in sustainable development and the green transition, by creating new jobs and fostering a cleaner, healthier environment.”
As part of the programme, a dialogue was held with the Local Urban Group, civil society representatives, and citizens engaged in EU projects for sustainable local development.
A visit to the newly opened info corner “EU i tačka” was also organised. This centre will be a place where the local community can receive for EU-related information. This info centre is housed in the Nikoljac Sports Centre, as part of the “EU for Municipalities” project.
